The annual Yulan Dharma Assembly at Ipoh’s Perpetual Memorial Park concluded successfully on August 30 and 31, 2025. The two-day event drew a large number of devotees, with the ritual site meticulously arranged and proceedings conducted in an orderly manner.

On the morning of the 30th, the grounds of Perpetual Memorial Park Ipoh were fully adorned—banners and lanterns hung across the venue, incense smoke rose in steady streams, and the sound of Brahma’s voice echoed through the surrounding hills. The assembly is led by Taoist masters and venerable Buddhist monastics, following traditional procedures.

It began with the raising of the Banner Lanterns, symbolising the Buddha’s light illuminating the world and dispelling all darkness. This was followed by the lighting of the Dragon Incense, where gentle spirals of smoke rose skyward, carrying the prayers and wishes of the devotees. The Consecration Ceremony of the King of Hell (Tai Su Yeah) represented the salvation of wandering souls, offering them comfort and protection.

Next was the consecration of ancestral tablets, allowing devotees to dedicate merits to their ancestors and pray for their liberation through the power of the Dharma. The consecration of the Dragon-Tiger Merit Board was then performed to invoke peace, longevity, and protection for the living and their families. The entire morning’s rituals proceeded seamlessly, concluding with the Deployment of the Guardian Soldiers to protect the sacred space, marking a successful and solemn completion of the first day of the ceremony.

The event attracted participants of all ages. Many families brought their children, while elderly devotees pressed their palms together in deep reverence amid the resonant chanting. The younger generation, guided by their parents, learned to offer incense and pay respects, embracing the values of honoring ancestors and preserving tradition. Under the soft glow of ritual lamps, the sacred atmosphere was imbued not only with solemnity but also with a profound sense of community and warmth.

The highlight of the second day was the “Breaking the Hell’s Gate” ritual. In the morning, devotees gathered once again at the altar area. A senior monastic led the chanting of sutras, employing Buddha’s names and ritual instruments in a traditional ceremony that symbolically opens the gates of the underworld, seeking to alleviate the suffering of departed souls in the lower realms.

The entire ritual was solemn and deeply moving. Monastics chanted mantras as the sound of sutras and ritual bells intertwined, filling the air with a sense of reverence. Devotees joined their palms in prayer, hoping that through the merit of the Dharma, departed spirits would be liberated and guided toward transcendence. The ceremony also served as a gentle reminder for everyone to practice virtue and accumulate merits in their own lives.

Some participants shared that the “Breaking the Hell’s Gate” ritual gave them a deeper understanding of Buddhism’s compassion and its mission to relieve suffering. While some brought ancestral tablets to pray for their own families, others came simply to dedicate prayers to lonely souls with no one to remember them. Whether out of filial piety or pure compassion, every participant approached the Dharma assembly with heartfelt sincerity.
