The Landlord God’s Birthday-Pray for the Blessing of Good Fortune
There are five folk celebrations of the birthday of the Landlord God, namely the 10th day of the 1st lunar month, the 10th day of the 2nd lunar, the 10th day of the 3rd month, the 10th day of the 4th lunar month and the 10th day of the 5th lunar month.
As evidenced by the spirit tablets of the Landlord God in family houses, the inscription comprises two parts: "The Dragon God of the Five Directions and Five Lands” and “The Landlord Wealth God of the Overseas Tang People". These two inscriptions represent the two different deities. The latter is the most commonly used appellation in Malaysia, whereas in China and Cambodia, "The Landlord Wealth God from Front to Back" is the most frequently employed. In southern Thailand, the appellation “Chinese-Thai Landlord God of Wealth” is often used.
The “Dragon God of Five Directions and Five Lands”, a Feng Shui deity that represents the gods of “Five Directions of Feng Shui Dragon Caves”, is believed to have the power to bring prosperity to homes. The "Landlord Wealth God" is a deity that is also associated with financial prosperity within a family's domicile. This deity is most commonly referred to as the “Landlord God” in folklore.
On the occasion of the Landlord God's birthday, offerings are made to the deity with the intention of bringing good fortune and prosperity to the family and business.
In general, the offerings made by the public on the Landlord God's birthday also have symbolic meaning. For example:
- Golden garlic and abacus: are believed to bring prosperity to business.
- Prosperity water and sweets: symbolizes smooth and pleasant relationships with family and friends.
- Black charcoal: known as "black gold" in Hokkien, symbolizing the earth's potential to produce gold.
- Folded golden pineapple: symbolizes prosperity.
- Treasure bowl: represents the accumulation of wealth.
Furthermore, a variety of other joss papers are also prepared for the occasion, including Five-coloured Dragon Clothes, Tu Niu Fu, Noble Papers, Gold Silver, Business Talisman, Landlord Joss Papers and Shi Bao.
