The Ascension Day of Master Qingshui, the Deity of Rain
Master Qingshui, also known as Qing Shui Zu Shi, is commonly known by the surname Chen. It is not known whether he is a Buddhist, Taoist or folklorist, but he is undoubtedly a local figure of great importance. He is regarded as one of the three most popular folk beliefs along with Mazu and Bao Sheng Da Di, also known as the Deity of Rain, the Goddess of the Sea and the Deity of Medicine respectively.
Master Qingshui is also known as the Black-Faced Ancestor. This name comes from the fact that in his lifetime he was trapped in a cave and smoked by an evil spirit for seven days but survived, or that he was poisoned by medicinal herbs and his skin turned dark. The name Dropping Nose Ancestor is said to have originated from the fact that the nose of his statue would drop as a warning of impending disaster.
What are Master Qingshui's accomplishments? What does he bless?
Bridge building: Master Qingshui "urged the construction of dozens of bridges" in Yongchun. When he came to Anxi, he also raised money to build Tongquan Bridge, Gukou Bridge, Taikou Bridge, and so on. Throughout his life, Master Qingshui built dozens of bridges to make it easier for people to travel.
Giving medicine: It is said that saving a life is better than building a seven-storey pagoda. According to legend, a severe drought lasted for a year, followed by a disease that caused untold suffering in ancient times. The people asked Master Qingshui for a prescription, and he saved countless lives by treating sick civilians with his excellent medical skills.
Praying for rain: Throughout his life, Master Qingshui performed numerous miracles by praying for rain and was credited with ending many droughts. His repeated success in praying for rain made him a miracle worker.
Where in Malaysia do you get to worship Master Qingshui? How can I pay my respects?
There are more than 20 temples in Malaysia, the most famous ones are Pahang Genting Highlands Chin Swee Caves Temple, Penang Fu Xing Gong Snake Temple, Penang Teluk Kumbar Cheng Chooi Chor Soo, Penang Hean Leng Keong, Perak Taiping Aulong Qing Yun Tan, Johor Batu Pahat Chin Swe, and so on. There are numerous other temples in Malaysia that have not yet been listed.
On the 6th day of the 5th lunar month, which is the day of Master Qingshui's deification, most of the temples dedicated to Master Qingshui will hold a grand ceremony to celebrate with the cutting of roasted pigs and the custom of eating peace. At the end of the event, the pork is distributed to the faithful, which is believed to bring good fortune and peace.
As Master Qingshui prays for the blessings of the people, heals the ailing and subdues demons, devotees could pay homage to the temple on this day and pray for good health and rain, which may be granted.
