Why do the Cantonese People Open “Wok” on the 24th Day of CNY?

The golden sesame balls signify prosperity and the crispy dumplings symbolises wealth in the family.

In Guangdong, it is common to see sesame balls and crispy dumplings during Chinese New Year. Why is this? It’s a traditional custom for Cantonese people to open ‘wok’ on the 24th day of CNY. Frying crispy dumplings, sesame balls, sweet egg twists and smiling sesame balls is said to bring good luck.

A perfect sesame ball is hollow, without cracks or shrinkage, and is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A perfect crispy dumpling is crispy and fluffy, with perfect complexity of taste. These are probably one of the Chinese New Year’s flavours of the Cantonese!
